Garmin inReach Mini 3 is the balance. 122.2 g. 1.9-inch color touchscreen plus buttons. IP67. MIL-STD-810. Multi-band GNSS. Two-way text, typical 160 characters. Interactive SOS. No photo. No voice. Battery up to 350 hours at a 10-minute interval. Operating window −20 to 60°C. Basic basemap. Real maps live in the app.

Garmin inReach Messenger Plus is the media unit. 117.2 g. IPX7. Tiny mono MIP, 1 × 0.43 in, buttons only. Photo and 30-second voice. Text to 1,600 characters. Battery up to 600 hours in low-power messaging at ten minutes. Reverse charging for a phone. About −10 to 60°C. No preloaded basemap. It cannot load maps. Mapping happens on a paired phone in the Garmin Explore app. On the unit, TracBack gives a basic compass arrow and distance back.

Garmin GPSMAP 67i is the navigator. 230 g. 3-inch color TFT. IPX7. MIL-STD-810. TopoActive maps on the device. Multi-band GNSS. Two-way text and SOS. No photo. No voice. Battery up to 165 hours with inReach at ten minutes. −20 to 60°C.

Desert notes, from the spec sheets only. Iridium does not need a cell tower. Heat ceilings sit at about 60°C across the set. Mini 3 publishes IP67 dust protection. Messenger Plus and 67i do not. Battery numbers assume a full sky.

Do all three send photos or voice messages?

No. Messenger Plus does. Photos go through the Garmin Messenger app. Voice is 30 seconds. Mini 3 does not. That is Mini 3 Plus. GPSMAP 67i is text and SOS.

What is the water rating for desert use?

Mini 3 is IP67, dust-protected, 1 m / 30 min. Messenger Plus and GPSMAP 67i are IPX7. All handle incidental water. Mini 3 is the one with a published dust rating.

Is a subscription required?

Yes for messaging, tracking, and SOS on all three. Garmin Response is the 24/7 center. Activation is a separate fee. Confirm live plan rates on Garmin’s US site. Dollar figures are not listed here.

Battery life in desert heat with tracking?

Mini 3, up to 350 hours at 10 minutes. Messenger Plus, up to 600 hours low-power at 10 minutes. GPSMAP 67i, up to 165 hours with inReach at 10 minutes. Full sky view assumed. Heat cuts lithium.

Can they navigate without a phone?

Messenger Plus has no preloaded basemap and cannot load maps. Mapping happens on a paired phone in the Garmin Explore app. On the unit, TracBack gives a basic compass arrow and distance back.
